The First Time I Heard The Notorious BIG (R.I.P 5/21/72 – 3/9/97)

9 Mar

Hi, my name is Daniel, but better known for my social media name Daddymack362, and the first time I heard the Notorious BIG I was a teen hanging around the older guys, hooking school and breaking rules. Before I heard Biggie Smalls, I was consuming artist such as; 2pac Shakur, Scarface, Snoop Dogg, Spice 1, Dr. Dre, MC Eiht and Ice Cube just to name a few acts I was listening to in the early 90’s.

So one day I decided to ditch school for personal reasons I won’t name in this article, but I was called by one of the older guys (OG’s) in my neighborhood to go and get a 2-packs of Phillie Blunts so he can stuff them with marijuana, and he paid me for running the errand.

I came back from the store, hand the OG his blunts and he looked at me and said: “Where are you going?” I replied “Nowhere, just hanging around” his reply “You should be in school getting an education instead of hanging out here with us”

He was absolutely right, but I hated school because you had to deal with a lot of ism’s teens shouldn’t have to go through while learning. Then he told me: “Get in the car, and let’s go for a ride”, and so I did. What I didn’t know was I would be consuming marijuana with the windows rolled up for approximately 30 minutes.

Back in the early 90’s cassette tapes were poppin’, and the OG I was riding around with purchased a copy of The Notorious BIG Ready To Die album. I can remember it like it was yesterday watching him unpackaging that classic tape with his teeth taking the plastic off and popping it in the cassette deck.

We’re three blunts in and I’m higher than the empire state building soaking up game from the OG. He passes me the fourth blunt and asked me: “What do you know about this boy?” my reply “Nothing, who is this guy, he’s dope”  he replied “This is The Notorious BIG, the fat guy from New York, and he’s about to blow up”

It’s almost like he heard it from someone else before he purchased the cassette because he knew what song he wanted to hear on that album. The song that made him want to buy Biggie’s album was “Things Done Changed”, which was very hardcore and touching on the harsh reality of the 90s.

Can you imagine a boy in his early teens listening to “Ready To Die”, getting hot boxed hanging with the OG’s? That was me, and I don’t regret it one bit because the listening session with the older guys to me was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

One this day March 9, 1997, The Notorious BIG was gunned down after leaving a party in L.A. and til this day his murder remains an unsolved mystery. Rest In Peace B.I.G. Thanks for reading my story on the first time I heard Christopher “Biggie Smalls” Wallace, and I’d like to hear your Biggie story in the comment section below.
